National Homebrew Day

Half Acre Brewery Tour
My allegiance to Half Acre Beer Company is growing day by day. Their recent small batch release of Ginger Twin, as well as their other limited release bombers I’ve picked up (Magnus Schwartz Beer, Baumé Chocolate Rye Stout) keep my taste buds excited while I wait for the next batches of my own beer to be ready. So, living only five blocks from the brewery, if figured it was about time to take their tour and see just what goes on inside.

Half Acre’s Ginger Twin
Last night, while my girlfriend was enjoying 2nd row floor seats at the Bulls vs Blazers game, I thought I should finish up my kegerator. And to do so, I needed some ammunition to get me through the evening. The decision was made to send a force up to Jewel to retrieve the Red Baron’s secret plans, then apprehend the Ginger Twin from Half Acre’s headquarters. The critical mission was successful, and our soldiers came home and celebrated.

A Bitter Heart
It’s been exactly a year now that I decided I wanted to brew for myself. One year ago, Valentine’s Day weekend 2009, my girlfriend and I, along with two close friends, headed up to Milwaukee for a couple days of brewery tours and good times. At the Lakefront Brewery tour, the grizzly old giant of a tour guide, who harnessed both a belt AND suspenders, with his hands on my shoulders says to the group, “One day, you could be just like me,” or something similar. So the snow is upon us, threatening to dump a foot on us today. And unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of taking a snow day and brewing up a batch. Damn you public transportation! Maaad Irish Red
Wit’ St. Patrick’s day nigh, I thought I’d brew sometin’ in the spirit o’ the ‘oliday. Nay, it’wernt goin ta be a stout, but radder an Irish Red. I have na’ brewed one of dese yet, and thoght it’wood be a good experience wit’ color and flavor charact’ristics.

2009: The Year in ReBrew
The year is coming to a close, and despite how busy it is right now, I wanted to take some time to reflect on what is now the best hobby I have ever started. I enjoy homebrewing first and foremost because the rewards are well worth it. My favorite thing about cracking open a newly released homebrew is doing so with a friend, watching their amazement that what I make can be as good, and in some cases better, than what the great microbreweries of the world produce.
